Jacksonville Health Insurance * News Flash

According to the latest health insurance report on John McCain, "the McCain proposal, would replace an income tax break for employees who currently receive health insurance from employers with a new refundable tax credit."

That could be as much as $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families for the purchase of private coverage, but a Jacksonville health insurance broker, said, "McCain's plan will not change incentives for employers at all, the end result - more people without insurance coverage. McCain's plan will encourage a significant number of employers to drop health insurance coverage all together because this would no longer be such a big benefit for their employees."

Florida Healthcare System Not Up To Par

June 1, 2008
Jacksonville, Florida

You probably won't see much news on our failing healthcare system in Florida: "Florida has the worst health care system in the nation." And, chances are they won't run the ads that say: "Florida's kids visit the dentist less often than Mississippi kids." Nor will they run pictures of kids, and sailboats, and sunsets, with the slogan: "19 percent of our Florida's children have no insurance" They may try to forget all about those facts, but they are true. Florida health care system is in deep trouble according to the independent study group. It is a tough report, said Morgan Moran (a Florida health insurance analyst), but "if we do not address the reality of Florida's health care problem, we will never be able to fix it."

Bradenton Florida Health Insurance * What is the Cure?

Bradenton, Florida

Why is everyone always talking about Healthcare? Should our wonderful government take over and run the healthcare system in the United State? Should we go the national healthcare route, or let managed care companies keep their record profits?

These are just a few of the topics and questions being discussed in all facets of our society. Viewpoints come from local, state and federal government, lawyers, insurance companies, and even doctor and other medical groups.

Moran Insurance reports that Senator and Republican presidential candidate John McCain prefers the open-market approach, which means less government involvement in health care. Senators and Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are promoting national health care run by the government. These are clearly two different sides, two different approaches. Either way, we still pay for it.

We have the third highest uninsured rate in the nation, with more than 3.8-million Floridians lacking health insurance. With many of the thick spending cuts in Medicaid loom just ahead. About the only bright spot is Gov. Charlie Crist's modest effort to create affordable basic policies aimed at working-class Floridians, which would offer incremental progress until there is the will and the means for universal coverage. Tampa Florida Health Insurance News

The Govenor of Florida Charlie Crist announced last month for improving health care in the Sunshine state. He as given the idea to Floridians that he could offer health insurance to the estimated 3.8 million Floridians who lack health insurance an affordable plan for "$150 a month or less."

Crist's "Cover Florida" proposal would not come with a state mandate that individuals had to buy it or employers had to offer it. And it would give insurance companies lots of leeway in deciding how to structure such a health plan -- as long they included "a robust package of preventive, primary and urgent-care benefits, including hospitalization." Florida Health Insurance Update On Gov. Crist His HealthCare Plan

Tallahasse, Florida Insurance Update — Most of the uninsured of Florida would be guaranteed a chance to buy health insurance with Crists new healthcare plan and companies could offer plans that might be cheaper because they wouldn't cover all ailment.

The plan proposed Tuesday by Gov. Charlie Crist. wouldn't require that employers offer health insurance, or that people have the coverage, unlike a universal health care plan that Massachusetts created or a plan being pushed by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Instead, it would say that insurance companies could create certain types of plans without typical coverage. For example, it might not offer coverage for maternity care _ which wouldn't be needed by a family that doesn't plan to have children. That could make the policy cheaper.

The plans would have to guarantee coverage to anyone aged 19 to 64 who can pay for it.

Auburndale Florida Health Insurance Update

An Orlando Florida based coalition grouped together many of the major employers in Florida during the early 1980's. The Florida Health Care Coalition has now expaned into many of the largest counties in Florida. This is an attempt to lower health insurance costs in Florida.

The coalition expanded to Polk County in 2000 and now represents large firms throughout Central and South Florida employing more than 2 million workers, according to Steve Henderson, director of risk management for the Polk County School Board and a member of the FHCC board of directors.

Other Polk organizations represented on the FHCC board are the Board of County Commissioners, Publix and the City of Lakeland. Watkins Motor Lines was an FHCC member until the firm was acquired by FedEx in 2006.

A Brief History

The FHCC was formed after Becky Cherney, now FHCC founder and CEO but then director of human resources for Tupperware, learned in 1983 that her company's health insurance costs would go up by 30 percent the following year.

"For what?" Cherney asked. "I knew what I was paying, but I sure didn't know what I was getting. I didn't know if we were getting the best doctors or the most effective pharmaceuticals or if the lives of our employees were improved.

"The first thing I learned is that everybody was to blame and nobody was in charge. You could get all the health care stakeholders in one room, point your finger anywhere and you'd be pointing at blame."

Health insurance companies did not perceive themselves as part of the health care system, Cherney said.

"They thought they were merely administrators," she said, indicating that the insurers saw their role simply to collect money from consumers, take their fee for service and pass on the balance to the providers. If the providers raised their prices, the insurance companies merely raised their rates.

After doing more research, Cherney said she "...realized that the issue was not cost, but quality." If she closely monitored quality, determining and then requiring the best management practice for any health issue, imposed the most efficient system for delivering care and, most importantly, plugged informed, conscientious consumers into the system, costs would go way down.

Keeping Costs Down

Although active membership in the coalition is limited to companies and institutions that employ 1,000 or more, even the smallest company can benefit from the coalition's efforts.

One FHCC service available to anyone is "eValu8," the coalition's tool for evaluating health insurance plans and wellness programs. The 30-page report can be downloaded from the group's Web site - www.flhcc.com - in PDF format.

The single most important thing any employer can do to control direct and indirect health-related costs, according to Cherney, is to encourage and empower employees to live healthy lifestyles and to assume responsibility for their own health.

Unhealthy lifestyles and employees' failure to monitor their own health and actively seek "wellness" account for most "unnecessary" health care costs.

An Ounce of Prevention

In mid-January, 12,000 employees plus retirees of the Polk County School Board were mailed invitations to take part in a half-day health fair in South Lakeland on March 8. Services include free screenings for cholesterol, glucose, vision, hearing, blood pressure and other health indicators.

Those services will cost the School Board. In the long run, however, they will save the Board - and therefore the taxpayers - significantly more money because diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other diseases are much easier and cheaper to treat and control when caught early.

Small and medium-sized companies may not be able to provide health and wellness fairs for their employees, but they might provide information about associations related to specific diseases and conditions, many of which offer free or low-cost screenings.

Proactive consumption, intervention and prevention represent "the million-dollar solution to the trillion-dollar (health care) problem," said the School Board's Henderson.

While Florida law prohibits companies from pooling their work forces to obtain better insurance rates, nothing prevents them from combining forces to share costs of health fairs and wellness programs.

And that's how the highest-quality health-care system becomes the least expensive.

"Well, we're working on it," Henderson said

Hillary Clinton Wins Florida Primary * No National Delegates Will Count

Miami, Florida January, 30, 2008

Hillary Clinton wins on Super Tuesday in Florida. The former president’s first lady took a commanding lead over Barack Obama, taking 50% of the voters. The DNC had decided that Democratic candidates would not be able to campaign in the state of Florida for the primary. This has lead to a lopsided victory for Hillary Clinton. Her camp states the victory as a big head of steam going into the next primary, while Obama's group states that, since there weren’t any national delegates, we see what happened as a tie. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama Heat Up In South Carolina * What will happen in Florida?

Tampa, Florida January 22, 2008
In a sign of just how tense and close the race for the Democratic presidential nomination has become, Illinois Senator Barack Obama, who has made a point of saying he wishes to avoid the politics of personal attacks, went on the offensive on Monday during a sniping Democratic debate in South Carolina.

Coming into super tuesday it still seems healthcare is going to be the hot topic. In last nights Democratic debate John Edwards And Hillary Clinton teamed up against Barack Obama stating that his plan for healthcare is not Universal. Hillary Clinton claimed that Barack Obama keeps changing his mind, from a single payor system, to a semi Universal healthcare system. Obama seems to correct Clinton in most instances, as Hillary seems to be a bit off base with her claims. Obama believes that everyone should have access to affordable healthcare, but you shouldn't mandate it, forcing people to buy coverage if they do not want it.

The race for 2008 continues into Florida this week. What do Floridians think about the different candidates and their healthcare programs? Will a single payor goverment run program work for everyone? Florida Health Insurance Web and Florida Health Insurance News would like our fellow Florida residents to comment on this question. What candidate has be best program to offer affordable Florida health insurance to the sunshine state? Please give us your thoughts...

We will post all of your comments and the results of our survey at Moran Insurance & Financial Solutions.

Morgan Moran Explores the HRA and Health Savings Account Options

Miami, Florida January 11, 2008

Explanation in how certain financial programs work with health insurance programs are very important to Floridians. Be sure you ask your insurance agent or broker what HRA or HSA's are. An informed consumer will make the better choice in choosing the correct individual or group health plan.

Health Savings Account Plan Documents

A Health Savings Account allows employee contributions, and HRAs can only be funded by employers. Core Documents is one of the nation's leading provider of HRA and HSA plan documents ($299).

I think the answer is that the beneficiaries of high-cost medical care don't want it to change.

When you look at who wins in this current environment of high costs, the list includes hospitals, medical insurance companies, malpractice insurance companies and HMOs, among others.

These companies lobby hard in Tallahassee and our nation's capital to keep the status quo because their profit lines will suffer.

Over time, I have seen one growing development that will eventually change the current system: the power of health savings accounts.

Health savings accounts have been implemented to return the health care purchasing power to the patient, not all these other people who are making the profits.

Health savings accounts allow patients to save tax dollars while buying catastrophic insurance with higher deductibles and lower premiums.

The difference is that the patient, not a third party, decides how the first $1,000 is spent, and the patient benefits if the dollars are spent wisely.

Third-party payers only spend wisely when it is their profit dollars that go up in smoke.

Health insurance premiums are increasing two to three times the rate of inflation.

Hospital costs are keeping up with what the market will bear in their prices. Informed consumers can make a choice and make the big difference.

The answer to the high cost of medical care is to return the purchasing power to the people and let them vote with their feet and their dollars as to where they can get the best and most affordable medical care.

Once one medical entity starts to compete with lower prices, other competitors will follow.

Maybe we will get lucky some day and the people in Tallahassee will open the medical market in Florida to true competition and get rid of Certificates of Need for new medical care institutions in Florida.

The status quo does not want real competition or reduction in Florida medical insurance costs. The real question is, what does the American family or individual patient want?

Affordable Florida Health Insurance In Politics

January 10, 2008
Health Insurance is in the forefront of the 2008 Presidential campaign. Many believe that if a Democrat is to obtain the white house, Universal Health Care would thrive in the United States. Does the American public know what a socialized medicine system would do for our country? Do you think that it would be a great accomplishment? Or would it hurt our sluggish economy? Please let us know at Florida Health Insurance News what your opinions are. Comment here!

Senate leader Harry Reid reacted to the cut in funding immediately saying; "Never has it been clearer how detached President Bush is from the priorities of the American people," Reid said in a statement. "By slashing a bipartisan bill to renew the successful Children's Health Insurance Program, President Bush is denying health care to millions of low-income kids in America."

The (SCHIP) - State Children's Florida Health Insurance Program - is a joint state-federal effort that subsidizes health coverage for 6.6 million people, mostly children, who come from families that earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to afford their own private health insurance coverage. According to health insurance experts, there are 35 million American's who fit into this category.

The Democrats who control Congress, with significant support from Republicans, passed the legislation to add $35 billion over five years to allow an additional 4 million children into the program. It would be funded by raising the federal cigarette tax by 61 cents to $1 per pack.

The president had promised to veto it, saying the Democratic bill was too costly, took the program too far from its original intent of helping the poor, and would entice people now covered in the private sector to switch to government coverage. He only approved a $5 billion increase in funding.

Bush argued that the congressional plan would have been a move toward socialized medicine by expanding the program to higher-income families. In contrast to what he wishes to impose on his fellow Americans, President Bush has spent much of his adult life with taxpayer-funded health insurance, or as he calls it, "socialized" health care.

As governor of Texas, Bush and his family's health insurance was taxpayer-subsidized. He receives health care from the taxpayers as president, and he and his wife Laura will continue to enjoy the benefits of "socialized medicine" for the rest of their lives.

Morgan Moran, a health insurance benefit expert said, "Tony Snow, the presidents former spokesman, frequently talked about the 'benefits' of private health insurance. Moran said, 'If Snow had left Fox News to begin a career, let's say as an independent small businessman, instead of going to work for the president, "he would not have been able to obtain a health insurance policy from the private health insurance industry that would have covered the treatment of his pre-existing cancer." His life, and his family's financial security would have been put at risk.'

'While it's not realistic for everyone to expect to have health insurance as good as the president of the United States, "why can't all of us have health insurance as reliable and affordable Florida health insurance as offered to Tony Snow" or the US Senate', said Moran?"
